Our Town book cover concept. Digital painting in Procreate. Personal exercise to design a cover for Thornton Wilder's play Our Town. Following are pages of notes and ideation prompts and sketches that lead to my final design and feeling. Eventually I felt like I wanted to express the concept of how we are all blind to what we have when living, something that was expressed in this great play. The story really resonated with me personally, made me appreciate what I have. I added a border between the towns people and the girl that represents the towns heartbeat, being the people who make up the community. I set the stage at the department of Births, deaths and marriage as that is a great way to express the human timeline. Obviously, I decided on a Norman Rockwell style of illustration as I feel his works really captures 1950s America and the style of the play that played out in my mind. The most challenging aspect of this project was finding references that had the poses I was looking for online and matching styles as I didn't want to invent the anatomy. I kept the painting loose as that is the style I like personally.
